I try to just get a grab from the viewport to keep things on a level playfield.

I'm going to really work on the next one though

Well, I read what it said about presenting your work in the best light (no pun intended) and that's why I do it. I can't think where I read that... now where was it...

I imported the picture and then use a line to draw each indivudual plank.
Once done i smoothen some of the vertexes of each plank.

Then extruded them. Same method for all planks.

A line as in a spline and then a surface modifier?

Yeah in shapes (splines) choose line. Then draw what you want. I drawned the plank when you
are at the point where you started you will be asked if you want the spline to be closed.

Once done convert the line into an editable spline and choose the extrude modifier.

Ah wicked, you know I learn as much from seeing how other people approached things as I do from actually doing it myself. Thanks Drecks.

The texture is actually quite simple. As this gate is made of planks you hardly see any repeats while
they are still visible on the texture. But as its devided on the planks they are gone.

Took an old planks texture from cg textures. Here is a smaller version of the original.
First took away that brown color on the center top. Then took away the mosses on the
right side of the picture. As there was to many on the left didn't touch that area.
Once all the mosses where gone on the right. I just selected the right side and copy paste that
in to a new picture. Then mirrored the new pic horizontal. And paste that new pic on
the left side of the original picture which made me get red of all the mosses there.
Did some clone stamp and erase but as you can see on the endresult it might need some more.
The different colors where done using hue and saturation end blending.
