On page 93, it states "To start the unwrapping process, I created a custom UV map template. This is used to initially unwrap the model using the checker pattern to ensure the various UV shells get a consistent amount of space on the texture sheet. The different color quadrants are useful to know where each UV shell sits within the 0-1 range in UV space. Figure 3.42 shows the UV template which is in the project files and the lid unwrapped using it."

I assume when he says project files he is talking about Floor_buffer_tex_01.

He doesn't explain how I am supposed to import this into 3dsmax, can someone please help clarify this?

I think you just apply it like any other texture, there should be a an arrow or box next to Diffuse you click on to choose the file you want to apply.

When I tried this the file stretched across the lid and it didn't look like the example in the book.

Thanks for the help, any more suggestions?

first of all you need to apply the mapping - then you need to adjust it.

It won't look the same until you've adjusted it.

Are you working through the book from start to finish?
If not, I'd recommend that you do as some techniques (like mapping) are explained in more detail at the start of the book - then later on we assume you know more about what you're doing.

I also need some help with this section.

I have found the checker pattern material and applied it, applied a unwrap uvw modifier, but I am completely lost as to what I'm supposed to be doing from there.
I am working in 2012 btw.
