I wrote this after a visit to my local game store and finding nothing I wanted to play / buy. I had forgotten all about it until I found it today doing a bit of a clean up. I have no intention of ever making it as I havnt done any programming in years and I have no idea what a game design document should contain so please forgive any short commings in it.


Game back story.

Set on an alien planet, semi jungle with plenty of strange fauna geographical rock formations. Humans had set up a colony on the planet to harvest the resources but for some reason decided to pull out, some of the settlers decided to remain, despite being unsupported. The remaining settlers eked out a living from the planet but after a period of time life has become very hard. Resources are few and far between and there has been difficulty maintaining any machinery, it has now reached a point where only the basic machinery to support life is working. An alien race has now also set up a colony to harvest the resources of the planet, The human colony has been attacked many times by the aliens and have barely been able to defend themselves and have often resorted to locking themselves with in the facility during the attacks only venturing out to collect basic resources or conduct essential repairs.
The humans have been able to monitor alien communications and are just beginning to be able to translate their language. From piecing the several messages together the colonists believe that the alien race is about to attack them with a devastating weapon from space. The aliens have also been building devices that appear to collect energy from the planets core and these are linked to the main base similar to power lines, the humans assume this has something to do with the weapon. As yet they appear to be offline. The game starts after another attack by the alien forces and the humans have ventured out into the compound again after the aliens have withdrawn.

The game world

The planet is mainly covered in fauna comprising of many alien plants of varied colours and sizes similar in size and variation to the jungles in South America. Scattered around the landscape are many features similar to that found in our jungles such as waterfalls, rivers and fallen trees. There are also many strange looking rock formations that appear to have grown in a similar fashion to cacti.

The weather on this planet is also very chaotic and frequently changes between heavy rain and sunshine. Some plants could be affected by these differing climatic conditions.

The human colony is situated in a clearing surrounded by a metal wall, with guard tower and a double gate, atop the wall there is an electric fence this has become damaged in the recent conflict with the aliens. With in the compound there are numerous pieces of machinery that have been butchered for parts and most are rusting away and only essential machinery is working such as a wind generators these are also in a poor state of repair. The building themselves are made from a concrete type material some are abandoned and are becoming over grown, Most of the inner structure to the buildings are subterranean and all the buildings have a double door arrangement. There are some buildings which are fully above ground used for storage of vehicles and an elevated landing pad which again due to non use has become overgrown. There are several other abandoned human colonies on the planet these have fallen into disrepair and are over grown providing other locations for the player to visit.

The alien colony I envision to be styled in futuristic version of the mayan structures with many references to alien animals in their architecture. The alien devices that collect power from the planet core appear to be creating power by harnessing the planets inner magnetic field, they are linked to the alien base by power cables that glow, The cables are supported every 150 meters by a Y shaped structures, the cable itself is not connected in anyway to this structure and passes between the two uprights. The glow from the cables attract predatory animals that are native to the planet some of which attack humans and aliens alike.


The aliens

The aliens are reasonably humanoid in shape with longer limbs, their respiratory system is also different as the have gills on the back which there armour also replicates. They are not any stronger or faster than the humans and don’t have any weapon advantage over the humans. There technology although appearing different to the humans is not any more advanced, the only advantage the appear to have it that they are resupplied from their home world. The alien characters decorate the armour with skulls of animals from their home world with some adorning their armour with feathers and bones. The same can be said for the vehicles. These are also painted in animal designs as if paying homage to various creatures. The aliens are currently collecting enough power to fire there weapon through the use of their power collectors.

The humans

Despite not being in contact with others outside the colony the human population is essentially fit and well, all persons are well fed and clothed. The weaponry available would not be too dissimilar to what could be found in armed forces today. There are some vehicles available to them but these have been maintained by cannibalizing other machinery to keep them running or to perform a specific task that they where never intended to perform originally.

Indigenous life

The indigenous life on the planet should appear very different to that on earth. Some creatures will be herbivores of various sizes, smaller and medium sized creatures should offer no threat to the player however larger creatures will most likely ignore the player unless shot or cornered causing the animal to panic and charge at the player.
Carnivorous life should pose a threat to the player and aliens alike with similar rules to the herbivores.
Some creatures should be attracted to the glowing power lines of the enemy to add an additional threat to the player should he or she decide to attack these structures.


Game Objective

The objective of the game would be to build a device made from both alien and human parts that would destroy the alien weapon. The player must collect these parts and return them to the base some parts will be quite large requiring the player to use a vehicle to transport them. Some of these vehicles will either have to be captured from the aliens others will have to be repaired by salvaging parts from other vehicles. Fuel for these vehicles is also in limited supply and it may be necessary to piggy back a lighter vehicle on the back of another to extend the range enabling the player to reach his / her final destination.

The game will end when the aliens have collected enough power to fire their weapon; the player may choose to extend the playing time by destroying either the power collectors or by destroying the pylons and breaking the glowing cable thus preventing the aliens from collecting the energy they need.

The player is not presented with missions but is guided through the game by an NPC revealing the plans of the aliens, presented in such a way as to make the player assume that these plans have been translated from intercepted alien transmissions. This will be done when the player is in direct contact with this NPC or over radio communication. The building of the device to destroy the alien weapon would be guided in the same way by revealing the locations of the objects the player has to find.
The player will select from a list suitable characters to perform tasks, some characters will not be capable of fulfilling some actions others may not have the strength required to carry some item back to the base others incapable of fixing certain or any vehicles. The player will have to decide which character is best for each particular task he or she wishes to perform. Player characters do not die but are placed in an infirmary for a period of time


Graphical style

The graphical style of the game should be that of a 1930`s sci-fi movies such as Flash Gordon / Rocketman but not comical, textures should be realistic in style but not obviously photographs ideally hand painted with both normal and specular mapping

Interesting ideá, so I guess it's a real-time strategy game? I guess it could be a RTS blend of genres. Have the humans explored most of the planet?

I dont see the game as a RTS but more a blend of several different types, a first person adventure / shooter with out a direct path for the player to follow with some resource management and strategy elements. The player instead of charging off to collect a part of the weapon may decide to attack the alien power generators to allow the game to run longer or maybe go off and salvage a few parts off an abandoned vehicle to aid him or her later in the game.

I am a useless games player and have a few games on a shelf that I have got so far on but then gave up on because I got stuck unable to complete a certain task. If I have attempted a mission or an objective more than a dozen or so times frustration with the game takes over the willingness to complete it. So this is more of a game for me.

Something that is missing which I should have put in the original brief is that the game play for a finite length of time, the aliens need to collect enough power to fire there weapon and when they have enough will fire their weapon and thus ending the game, The player may decide to increase the play time by destroying the alien power collectors.

I will put a mood board together today.

I wasnt going to take this any further as it was something I found on my hard drive after doing a long over due clean up, but gauging by the reaction I may do a few scenes in the future. Sadly my coding skills arnt up to it any more and to be honest it would have been to much for me even at the height of my coding days.

soon as I have finished sorting out the UV`s I do some sketches of what I am thinking for this game

Decided to knock up a mood board instead. I am imagining everything kept to roughly a single story and prehaps some parts built into a rock face.

Great Idea, I always have been fascinated with that era of Sci Fi, (Ray Guns and War of the Worlds.) Have you thrown together a completed pitch document? I’d love to see it.
